Presentation

My name is Marie Rhodin, DVM, associate Professor in equine clinical biomechanics at the department of Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. I graduated 2003, PhD in 2008 where I studied horse and rider interaction with focus on the effect of different head and neck positions on the kinematics of the back in riding horses. My main research focus experience in objective motion analysis for lameness detection with techniques as high-speed cameras, inertial measure units and video and computer vision. To implement objective measurements in the lameness exams I have looked into the effect of circular movement on movement symmetry in both sound and lame horses, compensatory lameness strategies and he effect of rider on movement symmetry. In 2017 I passed the board examination and was accredited as a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation. In 2019 I also become Diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation. My main research focus is orthopedic diagnostics, orthopaedic pain and objective motion analysis in horses, horse-rider interaction.

Teaching

I am teaching veterinary students in anatomy and orthopeadics at the clinic. I am also teaching in anatomy, biomechanics, lameness assessment for students from several programs.

Research

Orthopeadic pain in large animals
Monitoring of motion symmetry in young horses during training
Visual and objective lameness assessment
The effect of lungeing on movement symmetry in horses
Objective lameness assessment in dogs and cows
Comparison of different objective tools for lameness assessment
Motion asymmetry in riding horses- biological variation or lameness?
Movement asymmetries in horses-lameness or laterality?
